The F1 mechanic who was hit at the Bahrain Grand Prix has suffered a broken leg, officials confirmed Sunday.

The incident arose from a botched pit stop during which one of Kimi Raikkonen's pit crew members, Francesco Cigarini, who was tasked with fitting a rear tire, was hit by the driver, Auto Sport noted.

According to the report, there was a problem with the removal of the wheel and Cigarini was still in position when Raikkonen was released.

FIA confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that the "team released the car in a manner endangering team personnel and causing injury," according to The Mirror.

A tweet from Ferrari later confirmed that Cigarini had sustained a shinbone and fibula fracture.

Meanwhile, Ferrari has taken the rap for the accident after allegedly signaling Raikkonen to move off despite the tire not being connected, forcing the driver who was brought into the pits from third, to retire from the race without the tire.

"We did not finish the race, so it is not great but this is what happens sometimes," he said, per The Mirror.

Raikkonen added that he does not see what is happening behind his vehicle while at the pit stop.

"I go when the light is green and I don't see what happens behind," he said, according to Auto Sport.

"Unfortunately he got hurt. But you know my job is to go when the light changes - more [than] that, I don't know really. Hopefully he's OK."

Cigarini posted a photo to Instagram Sunday, saying that he had undergone surgery and that it was a success.
