Formula One racer Jenson Button and his wife, Jessica Michibata, were robbed while they slept at a French Riviera villa Monday, and the burglars who made off with more than $450,000 in valuables may have used gas to render them unconscious.

The Telegraph reported the couple, along with three other people, slept through the burglary and only discovered what happened when they awoke to a ransacked villa.

Michibata’s engagement ring, valued at more than $380,000, was stolen, The Telegraph noted.

Although there have been numerous reports of burglaries occurring while victims slept and police suspect a gas is being used to incapacitate the victims, authorities told the BBC there is no proof of that.

Medical experts said it would take a large amount of gas piped in through the air conditioning system to knock people out, and it would be expensive, the BBC said. They haven’t ruled out that some type of agent was used but question what it could have been.

Still, police said they suspect the use of gas and called it a "growing problem in the region."

A source close to Button told The Sun, "The first they were aware was when they woke up groggy the next morning and realized the house had been turned upside down. It was a terrifying experience for them to know these criminals were actually in the room with them."

Button and Michibata were so disturbed by the event, and especially the idea that the thieves may have been watching them during their entire stay, that they left the villa immediately.

"The police believe there were two criminals working together on the operation," the source said. "They were scoping out the property for the days before the raid and looking at the times Jenson and the others were coming and going from the house. What’s particularly terrifying for Jenson is that there were a couple of nights where the lads stayed out later and it was the girls left at the house alone."

One motorsport fan took the opportunity to joke about Button’s success:
