Americans for Prosperity Pressured to Reveal Donors in Nevada

By    |   Monday, 23 July 2012 10:27 AM EDT

Nevada Democrats are trying to force the super PAC Americans for Prosperity to reveal its donors, after the group founded by conservative billionaires Dave and Charles Koch targeted a state Senate candidate in the June primary, according to the Las Vegas Sun.

Under federal law, super political action committees aren’t required to reveal their contributors if they follow certain guidelines preventing them from using words like “vote for” or “defeat” in campaign ads.

But the Sun reported that Nevada campaign finance laws are much tougher and the group may have opened up its donor list to examination by simply sending out mailers attacking Democratic Senate candidate Kelvin Atkinson’s record in the state assembly, even though they did not expressly advocate for his defeat.

The National Democratic Party has filed a complaint with Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller, charging that the mailers are a violation of the state law, which is designed to limit third party attacks on candidates from groups that don’t reveal their sources of financing.
