The Association of Tennis Professionals is reviewing claims by Donald Young that Ryan Harrison made racially inappropriate remarks toward him during a match.
The two Americans were playing a match against each other in the New York Open on Monday when an argument erupted between them and they had to be separated by officials.
Young lost the match 6-3, 7-6, but later tweeted he was “shocked and disappointed” in Harrison. “I thought this was supposed to be an inclusive gentleman’s sport,” he wrote.
Neither Young nor Harrison would tell what was said to cause the remarks, but Harrison tweeted shortly after Young and protesting the accusation and calling Young’s comments “absolutely untrue” and claiming that video would clear him “100 percent.”
A woman named Valentina Lee, said to be Young’s girlfriend, claimed in a tweet that Harrison said “That’s what all you black people do” to Young during the match when Young shouted “c’mon” to cheer himself during the match, but Lee’s account has not been verified, Deadspin reported.
“The ATP takes any allegations of racial prejudice extremely seriously. A further review of all video and audio recordings from the match will take place as this matter is investigated further,” the ATP said in a statement.
