Diet Coke is adding four new flavors and new packaging in an attempt to rebrand the diet drink for a "new generation of drinkers" and reverse slumping sales.
The original Diet Coke formula will not be changed, but new flavors Ginger Lime, Feisty Cherry, Zesty Blood Orange, and Twisted Mango will be offered in 12-ounce cans that will be sold as singles and eight-packs, Coca-Cola announced Wednesday.
“Diet Coke is one of the most iconic brands loved by millions of fans in North America,” Coca-Cola North American Group Director for Diet Coke Rafael Acevedo said in a statement. “Throughout this relaunch journey, we wanted to be bold, think differently, and be innovative in our approach. And most importantly, we wanted to stay true to the essence of Diet Coke while recasting the brand for a new generation.”
Ideas for the new flavors came from more than 10,000 people across the U.S., and more than 30 flavor combinations were tested before the four new ones were chosen.
Coca-Cola also recently rebranded Coke Zero, changing its name to Coke Zero Sugar and making minor changes to its formula. The rebrand led to double-digit growth for that variety of zero-calorie cola and the company is hoping a similar sales jump will accompany the new flavors of Diet Coke.
Sales of Diet Coke fell 1.9 percent in 2016, and reports indicate that sales of all diet soda products have fallen 34 percent since 2005, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reported.
Many on Twitter were excited about the new Diet Coke flavors, though some said they were still not buying it.
