Democratic members of the newly sworn-in Congress are welcoming their GOP freshman counterparts with wry faux gifts: Tea Party "Membership Cards." In turn, new Democrats were given Nancy Pelosi "Lap Dog Kits."
According to Benjy Sarlin at
Talking Points Memo, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee sent these sarcastic cards to 35 new Republian members of the House.
The Tea Party Membership Card reads:
“Ideology over Solutions. Your Tea Party membership entitles you to: Unlimited votes against women’s rights. Authority to create and/or ignore any national crisis. Access to millions in undisclosed special interest cash. Full participation in a caucus united behind ending the Medicare guarantee. Ironically, government-funded health care paid for by taxpayers. Multiple chances to protect tax breaks for Big Oil and outsourcing donors.”
A press release from the DCCC communications director Jesse Ferguson says each member is identified as "the newest Tea Party House Republican who will put millionaires ahead of the middle class and dysfunction ahead of progress.”
The National Republican Congressional Committee also gave out house-warming gifts to new congressmen on the other side of the aisle on Thursday. These were branded with the name “Nancy Pelosi’s Obedience School, Official Lap Dog Kit.” A picture of a corgi.
“Congratulations,” the kit read. “Now that you’ve voted for Nancy Pelosi, you’re officially a Lap Dog! Here’s your kit to get you started.” It includes a member card, a rubber stamp, a bone and a plane ticket, “since Nancy's telling you how to vote, voters back in the district should a chance to meet her.”
According to a press release accompanying this one, it comes “complete with a ‘Yes, Nancy Pelosi’ stamp and an official Lap Dog membership card … [so new members] will be prepared to rubber stamp her tax and spend, big-government policies and support Democrats’ failed agenda,” according to
Buzzfeed.
