Demi Lovato said she refused to return to the Disney Channel because there was too much pressure on its young stars to be thin and she could not handle how eating disorders were being "normalized."

The 27-year-old actress and pop star knows all about eating disorders, having struggled with them from an early age, and she could recognize the damage being done to the emerging talent.

"I kind of looked around and had a moment where I was like, 'Wow. This is so terrifyingly normalized,'" she said in an interview with Bustle published Tuesday.

Lovato made her big break in 2008, when she was cast as the leading actress in Disney's "Camp Rock." She also appeared in the Disney series "As The Bell Rings" and "Sonny With a Chance." It seemed as if things were going well for Lovato, but in 2010 she reached breaking point after getting into a fight with a background dancer, which caused her to go to rehab.

She left there with a whole new perspective.

"I came out of the experience with the choice of talking about my struggles or my journey with the possibility of helping people, or keeping my mouth shut and going back to Disney Channel," she explained. "And I was like, that doesn't feel authentic to me. So I chose to tell my story."

Earlier this year Lovato, who has been vocal about her poor body image and mental health, shared what it was like to recover from an eating disorder on Ashley Graham's "Pretty Big Deal" podcast.

"I thought the past few years was [my] recovery from an eating disorder when it actually was just [me] completely falling into it," Lovato said. "And I just realized that maybe my symptoms weren't as obvious as before, but it was definitely an eating issue."

The "Sorry Not Sorry" hitmaker explained that those symptoms impacted other aspects of her life.

"I honestly think that's kind of what led to everything happening over the past years, just like me thinking I found recovery when I didn't and then living this kind of lie trying to tell the world I was happy with myself when I wasn't," she said.

Lovato pointed out that having a support base was crucial for recovery.

"When you don't have people that like, know the signs, around you," she said, adding: "I think what I really needed was someone to come in saying, 'Hey I think you might want to take a look at how much you're working out.'"
