For years, "Friends" fans have argued about whether or not Ross, played by David Schwimmer, and Rachel, played by Jennifer Aniston, were "on a break" in their relationship when Ross slept with a hot copy girl in season three of the hit sitcom. The incident led to Rachel dumping him, but since the breakup, viewers have been divided. Now Schwimmer has weighed in on the argument and settled it once and for all.
"Friends" ended in 2004 but the long-standing debate still follows Schwimmer. He explained that fans often yell out to him "you were on a break." It has remained a hot topic, even after all these years, but one survey set out to put the debate to rest.
In honor of the NBC comedy's 25th anniversary last year, a dating app polled over 1,800 singles to see whether they sided with Ross or Rachel. Sixty percent of respondents believe the couple were on a break, but 44% of women said Ross was cheating, People magazine noted.
Despite Schwimmer's comments to Fallon, it’s likely that fans will still debate the topic. And while the argument continues, Schwimmer took the time with Fallon to update fans on the highly anticipated upcoming HBO Max "Friends" reunion.
"The hope is that this reunion special, which we would love to shoot, it's unscripted, it's basically a fun interview and then some other surprise bits. But it's supposed to happen in August, the middle of August," he said.
"But honestly," Schwimmer added, "we're going to wait and see another week or two if we all determine it's really safe enough to do. And if not, we will wait until it's safe."
