An elderly couple is being praised for teaching a young man how to tie his tie during a train commute in Atlanta, a random act of kindness that has now gone viral on Facebook.

"The young guy sitting down was struggling with his tie," wrote fellow commuter Redd Desmond Thomas, who posted the now famous picture of the touching moment to the social network.

"The woman in the red coat noticed, and asked 'Do you know how to tie it properly?' The young guy said 'No ma'am,'" he continued.

"She taps her husband and says 'Come to this side and teach this young man how to tie his tie.' The older gentleman moved without hesitation and gave him a step-by-step tutorial; then - afterward - the elder gentleman watched the young gentleman repeat the steps and show him that he had it."

The photo, posted on Saturday, had nearly 1 million "likes" as of Tuesday.

Thomas explained that he saw the event transpire at Atlanta's Lindbergh Center, and moved a bit closer specifically to capture the moment with a photo.

Among the post's nearly 2,000 comments, fellow Facebook users praised the older couple for passing their wisdom on to the next generation, and praised the young man for humbly accepting that wisdom.

"Imagine how many lives we can touch and differences we all could make if we just sacrificed a few minutes of our time for someone in need. It goes beyond putting up a country’s flag and mourning the dead… it starts in our very own communities," wrote one commentor, The Daily Mail noted.
