Republican lawmakers in Colorado are looking to stem the tide of more than 11,000 registered voters in the state who were not U.S. citizens when they got their driver’s licenses, the Denver Posted reported Wednesday.

Scott Gessler confirmed 106 of these voters improperly registered because they presented the state Department of Revenue with noncitizen paperwork after registering.
Gessler and state Rep. Chris Holbert, a Parker Republican, are pushing a bill that would allow the state to check the voter database to determine if registered voters are in fact citizens. The bill goes before the Colorado House State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee.
"My office has every reason to believe that thousands of noncitizens are registered to vote in Colorado," Gessler said. "House Bill 1252 will allow us to inquire for more information using public databases."
Gessler said he wants to clean up voter rolls, and that’s he’s not trying to be a prosecutor.
