Some fans cheered when San Francisco 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard went down with an injury during Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks, and 49ers players aren't happy about it.
The fans cheered when recent trade acquisition Jimmy Garoppolo began to warm up, but players felt they were not respectful to Beathard, who was still down on the field as the medical team checked him over. With just over a minute left in the game, Beathard went down with a knee injury after being hit by Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett.
“Our starting [QB] got hurt and people are cheering before he even stands up,” safety Eric Reid said, The Mercury News reported. “That pisses me off. I’m disappointed in our fans. I understand the excitement about Jimmy, he’s a great player, but that’s not right.”
“Our fans are better than that,” linebacker Reuben Foster added. “You wait until a guy gets up to cheer, not when a guy’s down.”
According to The Mercury News, left tackle Joe Staley said he didn't think fans meant to cheer the injury.
“I don’t think it was malicious by our fans, that they were cheering he was injured,” he said. “They were excited. But at the same time, you can’t do that.”
The stadium had emptied out considerably when the injury happened, since it had started raining and the 49ers were losing 24-6 in the final minutes of the game.
Garappolo only had three snaps when he took the field with 1:07 left in the game. One was a touchdown pass that brought the score to 24-13.
Beathard will have an MRI on his hip and knee Monday, and it is unknown yet whether he will have to miss any future games.
