A Chicago teenager was shot and killed Sunday morning while delivering newspapers with his stepfather, and police are looking for the killers.

Police think 15-year-old Brian Jasso was mistaken for another teen and got caught up in a turf war between two gangs when he was shot on Chicago’s Southwest side, USA Today reported. Witnesses said the assailants rear-ended the car Jasso was riding in and then shot Jasso from the open window of their car, wounding him in the head.

Neither Jasso nor his stepfather had any gang affiliation, police said.

An earlier gang-related shooting in which two people were killed and a third wounded may have been connected to Jasso’s shooting, USA Today reported. No arrests have been made in either shooting; police are still investigating both incidents.

More than 630 people have been killed in Chicago in 2017, but the city will probably end up with fewer than the 760 murders it had last year, police records suggest. Even so, it will likely have more murders than New York and Los Angeles combined, even though those cities have nearly five times the population of Chicago (12.5 million vs. 2.7 million), USA Today reported.

Jasso’s sister Shadden said her brother was trying to earn money to buy Christmas gifts for her family and a birthday gift for her.

“He was trying to work. He wasn’t doing anything bad,” she said, WGN-TV reported

A total of six were killed and 14 wounded in Chicago violence over the weekend.
