NBC News announced Monday morning that the network has hired Chelsea Clinton, the 31-year-old daughter of former President Bill Clinton and current Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, as a full-time special correspondent.
Chelsea will begin work immediately and contribute to the network’s “Making a Difference” series, which is featured on “NBC Nightly News.”
Steve Capus, president of NBC News, told New York Times media reporter Bill Carter that Chelsea is passionate about stories of individuals who are making personal contributions.
“What we talked about was if she were to come on board that’s the kind of thing she would be interested in doing. We knew she wasn’t going to do the lead story. But having somebody who was going to do really captivating feature assignments for the ‘Making a Difference’ franchise really kind of synced up,” Capus said.
He added, “It’s not about Chelsea Clinton saying, ‘Here I am; I want to be a TV star.’”
In a released statement, Chelsea indicated the following: “I hope telling stories through ‘Making a Difference’ — as in my academic work and nonprofit work — will help me to live my grandmother’s adage of ‘Life is not about what happens to you, but about what you do with what happens to you.’”
NBC News has previously hired daughters of presidential candidates and past presidents.
Meghan McCain, daughter of former GOP presidential candidate John McCain, is a contributor to MSNBC, and Jenna Bush Hager, daughter of former President George W. Bush, works as a correspondent for NBC’s “Today” show.
