"CBS This Morning" anchor Charlie Rose announced Wednesday he will undergo surgery Thursday to replace his aortic heart valve, which previously was replaced in 2005.

In a statement on CBS’s website, Rose said, "Almost 15 years ago skilled surgeons replaced my aorta valve with a new replacement valve. It has served me well enabling me to live the vigorous, full, complete life you are all so familiar with. No one loves life more than I do.

"To continue to live this amazing life so full of challenges and friends, including so many of you in the audience, I have chosen to replace the valve with a new one. The timing is my choice."

Rose, 75, has co-anchored “CBS This Morning” with Norah O’Donnell and Gayle King since 2012. The show has steadily gained viewers under Rose and his co-anchors, leading to CBS’s most competitive morning television ratings in almost 30 years, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Rose also hosts an evening show on PBS that airs on Bloomberg Television.

O’Donnell said on "CBS This Morning" Wednesday that she had talked to Rose the previous night and that “he is optimistic about this tune-up.”

Saturday anchor Anthony Mason and lead anchor of digital news channel CBSN Josh Elliott will fill in while Rose is recovering, along with others.

Rose expects to return to the show in March.
