The curtain may be rising on Carly Fiorina's presidential chances, but the curtain backdrop was falling on the Republican candidate at a campaign stop in San Antonio on Sunday.
No one was hurt at the Marriott Rivercenter where Fiorina was speaking to the National Association of Women Business Owners 40th annual conference,
reported the San Antonio Express-News. The backdrop collapsed around Fiorina during her remarks to the group.
"The former Hewlett-Packard Co. CEO preached female empowerment at a convention downtown where about 200 guests got to see Fiorina in action during a stressful moment," wrote John W. Gonzalez, of the Express-News. "She stayed on stage as a huge curtain backdrop collapsed around her during her remarks."
KXAS-TV reported that when Fiorina returned onstage and asked if everyone was okay, someone in the audience yelled out "Trump."
Fiorina jokingly responded, "Trump, Hillary, it could have been lots of people."
Fiorina continues to surge in the polls, with the latest from NBC/Wall Street Journal showing her tied for third with U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio at 11 percent.
NBC News noted that Fiorina was listed at two percent in the same poll in June.
Trump led in the poll at 21 percent and was closely followed by Dr. Ben Carson with 20 percent.
After the backdrop fell, Fiorina continued with her remarks, saying she's been competing with the "big boys all my life" while recounting her start in the business world, said the Express-News.
"It is only in this country that a young woman can start out typing and filing and answering the phones and go on to lead the largest technology company in the world and run for president," Fiorina told the audience.
Fiorina said businesses today are "being crushed by a government that has grown so big, so complicated, so powerful, so costly, so inept, so corrupt."
