One person is dead and another injured following a shooting near Busch Stadium Sunday night.

The incident happened at Ballpark Village, an entertainment district across the street from the St. Louis Cardinals’ stadium.

Police said the shooting was precipitated by an argument shortly after 8 p.m. at a ticketed event held on the rooftop level of the Budweiser Brew House, USA Today reported, where the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and started shooting. There were several hundred people at the event at the time of the shooting.

Both victims were males in their 30s and may have been bystanders unconnected with the argument, the St. Louis Post Dispatch reported. One was shot in the head, the other in the thigh. Both men were rushed to a local hospital where one was later pronounced dead.

St. Louis police Maj. Mary Warnecke said detectives began interviewing witnesses at the scene, but said there may be others who have information leading to an arrest.

“We know there were a lot of people who saw this, and we want to hear from them,” she said, the Dispatch reported.

IDs were checked at the entrance to Ballpark Village, according to several patrons, and the event provided private security, including off-duty officers, Warnecke said.

“We have lots of security at venues like this, but if someone pulls out their weapon ... it’s very difficult to prevent,” Warnecke said.

The Cardinals were playing a game against the Pirates in Pittsburgh when the shooting occurred. They’re scheduled to return to Busch Stadium on Tuesday.

"We are shocked and saddened by the senseless shooting at a private event at Ballpark Village Sunday night," the Cardinals said in a statement. "There is nothing more important to us than the safety of our guests. We are praying for the victims and their families and we are working in every way possible to help the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department with their investigation, including their effort to apprehend the individual responsible."
