Bruce Willis' Hair Throwback: Actor Dons Wig for Letterman Appearance

Bruce Willis appeared on "The Late Show With David Letterman" this week rocking a full head of hair — a throwback look to his first appearance on the show in 1985 made possible thanks to a wig.

"I recently had a dramatic birthday and I've just been very sentimental about it, and I decided to go back to the very first look that I ever did on the David Letterman show," Willis told the talk show host, explaining that he turned 60 on March 19.

Letterman, for good measure, pulled out a photo of Willis from his first 1985 appearance, leading Willis to crack a joke: "I should've put a little more makeup on."

It marked Willis' last likely appearance on the show, as Letterman announced back in December that was ending his 22-year "Late Show" run on May 20. Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert will take over the time slot in the fall, according to the Los Angeles Times.

While Willis celebrated his trip to Letterman with a wig, Michael Friedman, a clinical psychologist in Manhattan, explained in The Huffington Post last month that the actor actually helped make it cool for men to be bald.

"I can think of no better way to celebrate Bruce Willis' 60th birthday than by thanking him for making the world better for bald men everywhere," Friedman wrote for The Huffington Post. "Sure, a celebrity's birthday is an excellent opportunity to examine their professional work . . . But it was Bruce Willis deciding to shave his head for the role of Butch Coolidge in 'Pulp Ficton' that made a definitive statement — losing your hair can be cool. And in doing so he helped a lot of men, including this author, go from despair to determination."

Friedman wrote that men still see hair as an important part of their self-esteem, citing one study in which 70 percent of the participants said that hair was an important body feature and 43 percent said that losing it negatively affected their attractiveness.
