Cuban actress Broselianda Hernandez has been found dead on the Miami Beach shoreline. The 56-year-old star was last seen alive on Tuesday night, when she went out to buy cigarettes and never returned, according to The Associated Press. A witness called police at around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday after discovering a woman's body near the shoreline in the vicinity of 79th Street, said Miami Beach Police spokesperson Ernesto Rodriguez. Officers and firefighters later identified her as Hernandez.

Police believe Hernandez drowned but the medical examiner's office is yet to release an official cause of death. No foul play is suspected at this time, police said.

Born in Havana, Cuba, Hernandez carved a name for herself in film, TV, and theatre. She kickstarted her career as a soap opera actress in the 1990s, with appearances in "When Water Returns to Land" and "Women of Honor." From there she went on to star in various films including "Habanera," "Things I Left in Havana," and as the mother of Jose Martí in the 2010 biopic of the Cuban independence hero, "Martí, the Eye of the Canary," according to The Wrap.

Five years ago, Hernandez moved to Miami.

Upon learning of her death, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez paid his respects on social media.

"Farewell to an exceptional actress named Broselianda," he tweeted. "We mourn her early loss. Our condolences to her family and friends."

Hernandez is survived by her grown daughter, Sofia, her life partner, and her parents. Her mother, Rosa Ileana Budet, is also an actress, according to Cuba Debate.
