Brooklyn Woman Falls From Ski Lift in Catskills, Dies

By    |   Monday, 29 Dec 2014 06:02 PM

A 44-year-old Brooklyn woman was killed when she fell from a ski lift in the Catskills on Sunday.

Ola Filkin fell about 25 feet from a chairlift at Hunter Mountain in New York’s Greene County, NBC New York reported.

She was on a “D” lift that carried skiers halfway up the mountain, and she had gone up about 100 feet when she fell, NBC said. She was treated on the scene and transported to the first aid room at the resort.

The Associated Press reported that an autopsy found that Filkin’s death was “consistent with a fall.” Police told the news agency that she was in a chair by herself, with the bar down in front of her, when the incident occurred.

Coroner Hassan Basagic III told Reuters that Filkin, who is married with at least one child, “was getting ready to get off the chairlift and she fell.”

Drug and alcohol tests on Filkin still aren’t in, but Basagic told Reuters he didn’t think that was an issue.

New York State Police told Reuters that an investigation is pending, but that the death appears to be accidental.

“This is a terrible tragedy,” Russ Coloton, resort president, said in a statement. “We can only imagine what the family is going through, and we stand ready to assist them in any way that we can.”
