Michael Schumacher Faces 'Long Fight' One Year After Horrific Ski Crash

Michael Schumacher continues to make a slow recovery after suffering severe injuries one year ago in a tragic skiing accident at the French Alps report of Meribel.

Monday marked the one-year anniversary of the crash that nearly killed the Formula One legend, and his manager told the BBC News that he still faces a "long fight."

The comments were reported along with those allegedly made by Phillipe Streiff. The retired French racer, who claims to be a friend of Schumacher's, told Le Parisien newspaper that he had spoken with the racer's surgeon, Professor Gerard Saillant, who said Schumacher had started communicating with his eyes and recognizing close family members.

"At least he is starting to recognize his family, his wife, and children, but he has large memory problems," Streiff reportedly told Le Parisien, according to the International Business Times. "He is getting better but everything is relative. It's very difficult. He can't speak. Like me, he is in a wheelchair, paralyzed. He has memory problems and speech problems."

But Saillant has denied giving any such information to anyone.

"For a year, I have never had any contact, verbal, written or physical with Phillipe Streiff," the surgeon said in a statement.

Schumacher was a seven-time world champion Formula One driver when he suffered severe head injuries in a skiing accident on Dec. 29, 2013, according to CNN. After undergoing emergency brain surgery, he remained in a hospital for nine months before moving to his family home in Switzerland.

The last family update came in September, two months after it was reported that Schumacher had come out of his coma.

"Considering the severe injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months," the statement said. "There is still, however, a long and difficult road ahead. We ask that the privacy of Michael's family continue to be respected, and that speculations about his state of health are avoided."
