Brooke Burke-Charvet, the former "Dancing with the Stars" co-host, appeared on the cover of
Shape magazine this week, and revealed details about her recent battle with cancer in a tell-all interview.
"I feel like I’m beginning the best part of my life," she explained while discussing her recent recovery. "It’s crazy that not long ago I had cancer and now I’m cancer-free, and that might not be the case if I hadn’t gone for a checkup."
The 42-year-old Burke has long been a symbol for healthy living and the beauty it confers, and now more than ever she continues to advocate for things like exercise and regular checkups.

Burke was used to getting routine checkups as she has had Hashimoto’s disease, a common cause of hypothyroidism, for over ten years. She said her 2012 diagnosis came not from a specialist, but from a general practitioner.
"The condition wasn’t even diagnosed by a thyroid doctor but during a regular checkup," she said. "They found a questionable lump. Then I got an ultra-sound and biopsies, and sure enough, it was cancer. But the prognosis was great."
According to ABC News, Burke eventually had a thyroidectomy, which seems to have cleared her system from the cancer.
"They took it out, it’s gone, and it’s all good," she said. "I started working out the day I was allowed to. That’s just me. I feel better after my workout for a million reasons."
After her years-long stint on "Dancing with the Stars," Burke said she's focused on her new line of athletic wear, Caelum, and has also finished filming a few episodes of "Melissa and Joey," where she plays the mother of Joey's daughter.
Concluding the interview, she advised readers to not shy away from visiting the doctor.
"Care for yourself, especially as you get into your 40s. Always get your annual physicals and mammograms," she said.
