Boy Invents Save Me App: Panic Button Sends Text for Help

A Texas boy has invented a "Save Me" app with easy-to-use panic button functionality that could save users from abductions, assaults, and more.

"I hope it will save somebody's life," 12-year-old Dylan Puccetti of Galveston told KHOU. "If I was getting abducted and I have my phone in my pocket, all I have to do is reach down and press the power button."

The Save Me app is currently available on Android smartphones via the Google Play store. When a user presses their phone's power button six times in a row, the app sends a pre-written text message to contacts chosen ahead of time. For a 99-cent upgrade to Save Me Pro, users' panic messages will also send location data that can be viewed on a map.

Puccetti has his set up to text his dad.

"His mind is always going," said Dylan's father, Michael Puccetti. "He's always thinking of great stuff."

A prodigal inventor from a young age, Dylan Puccetti already has two patents under his belt, and in fifth grade he designed an instrument that teaches aspiring baseball players how to pitch.

Puccetti told reporters he got the idea for the Save Me app after his father told him stories about his friend, Jessica Cain, a teen who went missing in 1997 from Galveston County.

"She needed an emergency alert button," he explained.
