Bobby Brown Files for Control Over Bobbi Kristina's Estate: Report

By    |   Tuesday, 28 April 2015 01:52 PM EDT

Bobby Brown has reportedly filed to get control of the estate of his daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, who remains hospitalized after being found unresponsive in her bathtub on Jan. 31.

“He’s her father. He has the power to make medical decisions only,” an unnamed source told the New York Daily News, adding that the court filing seeks to give Bobby Brown control of the 21-year-old’s financial affairs.

The daughter of Brown and the late Whitney Houston was placed in a medically induced coma and moved to Atlanta's DeKalb Medical Center last month.

The amount of money involved is unknown. Bobbi Kristina was set to get a 10-percent share of her late mother’s estate when she turned 21, but that didn’t happen, the Daily News noted.

On April 18, Brown said his daughter was awake, but the girl's maternal grandmother later said she has irreversible brain damage and remains unresponsive.

Steve Worrall, an estate planning, probate, and adoption attorney, told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that filing for guardianship would codify Brown’s legal authority to make decisions regarding his daughter’s care.

“It would be appropriate for him to apply for guardianship, conservatorship, or both. Once (Brown) is appointed as guardian he would have the authority to handle her person. A conservator would have the authority to make financial decisions. Certainly somebody needs to handle her financial affairs,” he said.

Bobbi Kristina’s grandmother, Cissy Houston, responded to the move in a statement to WXIA-TV.

"This is a family matter involving sensitive information. We hope to resolve this in a manner that is respectful of Bobbi Kristina's sensitive health information,” she said. “The Houston family has always looked out for the best interest of Bobbi Kristina Brown. The family has done so all of her life and will continue to do so. We trust that others have the same objective.”
