Cissy Houston: Bobbi Kristina Has 'Irreversible Brain Damage'

By    |   Tuesday, 21 Apr 2015 11:28 AM

Bobbi Kristina Brown, daughter of Bobby Brown and the late Whitney Houston, has "irreversible brain damage" and, though she is out of a medically induced coma, she remains unresponsive, grandmother Cissy Houston told Us Weekly Monday.

The statement contradicts one the 22-year-old's father made over the weekend, when he told the audience at a show that his daughter was "awake" and able to look at him.

"I have just returned from visiting my granddaughter Bobbi Kristina in the hospital and, while she is no longer in a medically induced coma, she has a tracheotomy and according to the doctors she has global and irreversible brain damage and remains unresponsive," Cissy Houston told Us Weekly.

"Meeting with the doctors and understanding that she can live in this condition for a lifetime truly saddens me. We can only trust in God for a miracle at this time. Keep us in your prayers," she continued.

In an apparent response to Houston's statement, Bobby Brown's attorney Christopher Brown attempted to put a positive spin on Bobbi Kristina's condition with a statement to CNN Monday.

"Doctors have indicated that she will have a long life," the statement said. "However, Bobbi Kristina is presently embarking on a rehabilitation process, and the quality of her life will not be known for years to come."

Bobby Brown's wife, Alicia Etheredge-Brown, also said that her stepdaughter has advanced to the rehabilitation stage, CNN noted.

"She has made it out of (intensive care unit), opened her eyes and started a rehabilitation that will be long and hard," Etheredge-Brown said.

Bobby Brown, 46, told the audience at a Frankie Beverly concert in Dallas on Saturday that his daughter had woken up.

A source with knowledge of Bobbi Kristina Brown's condition contradicted Bobby Brown's claim to People magazine.

"As far as I know, there's been no change," the source told the magazine. "We're still hoping and praying that God will perform a miracle. We are leaving it in God's hands."
