Batman stamps will be available through the U.S. Postal Service starting October 9.
According to USA Today, the stamp set will consist of eight designs depicting four eras in the long-running legacy of the Caped Crusader. That legacy is a long one, stretching back to 1939, when Batman first took a stand against crime in Gotham City.
"He is the quintessential American superhero," says Susan McGowan, the Postal Service's director of stamp services and corporate licensing.
"What a great place to celebrate him — on a stamp. We are always looking for ideas and subjects that are important to America. We all quickly thought, 'Wow! This will be thrilling.'"
With the release of the stamp set, the Dark Knight will be immortalized alongside Superman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Wonder Woman — all of who have been featured on a stamp at one point or another.
Batman will graced the Postal Service's "Forever" stamps, which currently cost 49 cents, but will be honored as long as the postal system survives.
Roughly 25 limited-edition stamps each year, and the release of the Batman stamps has been timed to coincide with the kickoff of New York Comic-Con, which runs from October 9-12 at the city's Javits Center.
"Batman has inspired and influenced fans around the world for generations and will continue to do so for the next 75 years and beyond," said DC Entertainment co-publisher Jim Lee.
