An Arizona train derailed during heavy rains Tuesday, spilling debris along the side of Interstate 10 and halting rail traffic as crews worked around the clock to clear the tracks, Fox News reported.

The Union Pacific freight train was traveling during a heavy thunderstorm that had struck the area when it hit water that had flooded the tracks and derailed sometime before 3:30 p.m. in Marana, located on the outskirts of Tucson.

Twenty-seven cars derailed in the middle of the train, ending up lying on the frontage road of the interstate.

No injuries were reported and the railroad set about clearing the area immediately.

In a statement released Wednesday, Union Pacific said crews had worked through the night to inspect and secure the area and clear the wreckage and debris that was strewn across the tracks, Tucson News reported.

The railroad also reported using cranes to begin returning derailed cars to an upright condition on the tracks.

Rail traffic resumed Wednesday following the incident but Marana police reported heavy congestion on Interstate 10 due to slow-moving trains.

The official cause of derailment is still to be determined, however, Tucson News reported water on the tracks at the time of derailment.

Arizona was hit by heavy rain Monday, which left widespread power outages in its wake. On Tuesday a Phoenix dust storm blowing through the Phoenix area and across both Interstate 8 and Interstate 10, resulted in an accident that closed down Interstate 8.
