An Arizona mother told authorities she drowned her 2-year-old twin boys in a bathtub, and she tried to drown a third child but her mother stopped her.
Mireya Alejandra Lopez, 22, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of homicide and attempted homicide,
reported the Arizona Republic. A family member called 911 after the twins were discovered in a bathtub at the home in Avondale, just west of Phoenix.
Avondale police Sgt. Brandon Busse said emergency personnel attempted to revive the boys at the scene and transported them to different hospitals where they both were pronounced dead after arrival.
"I wouldn't rule (a drowning) out, but when we arrived, they were on the bed," Busse told the newspaper. "We won't officially say it's a drowning until they go through an autopsy."
According to KPHO-TV, an officer said Lopez told police she drowned the boys "because nobody loved them and nobody loved her."
"Mireya also stated to investigators that she also attempted to drown another child in the home but she was stopped by family ...," said Busse.
Lopez's mother, Mireya Kissi, reportedly stopped her daughter from injuring the other child, described as a 3-year-old stepbrother to the twins.
"She was concerned about him as he rarely ate and he was anti-social," an officer said.
Daniel Marino, Lopez's stepfather, said the deaths were upsetting.
"They were just so full of life and had a big future," said Marino. "I raised them just like my own; it's heartbreaking that they're not here."
The twins' father, Sam Avitia, told KPHO-TV that Lopez suffered from depression and anxiety and was taking medication, but never showed any violent tendencies.
"We asked for more help from the clinics, but they kept releasing (Lopez) and said we can't hold onto her," said Marino.
