An arctic blast is aimed at the Midwest and South this week, bringing in the coldest air of the season to those areas of the country, according to AccuWeather.

Temperatures are expected to drop by 20 to 30 degrees in the southern Plains and the lower Mississippi Valley, along with the much of the southeastern United States later in the week, AccuWeather said.

The cold weather is expected to reach as far down as the southern-most tip of Texas, where temperatures in Brownsville, which enjoyed weather in the mid-80s Monday, will drop to the upper 50s by midweek, AccuWeather noted.

AccuWeather said even Florida will not be spared from cold temperatures, with the Florida peninsula seeing temperatures drop 15 to 25 degrees by the weekend.

"For many areas of the Deep South, this outbreak of arctic air will bring the first hard freeze of the season," AccuWeather senior meteorologist Brett Anderson, said on its website.

The Weather Channel said a change in the jet stream pattern will amplify in a north-to-south fashion with a southward plunge setting up east of the Rockies. The channel reported that this type of weather pattern typically allows for colder air to spread through the eastern half of the nation.

"Unlike many cool air bursts so far during astronomical autumn, which have only lasted a couple of days, cold air will sweep in and then build," AccuWeather chief meteorologist Elliot Abrams said on its website.

Weather Underground meteorologist Bob Henson pointed out on Twitter, though, the cold snap will not produce record low temperatures in a fall that has seen its share of higher temperatures so far.

The National Weather Service in Boston tweeted that the colder weather will shift to the eastern portion of the United States by Dec. 11.
