Boston hit a cold weather record Saturday morning, breaking a record that has been held for over a century in the process.

Boston's temperature tumbled to 23 degrees, the lowest temperature on Nov. 11 since 1901, the Boston Globe reported.

"We hit 23 (degrees) this morning," National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Simpson told The Globe. "The last time it got so cold was in 1901, when it was 24 (degrees)."

Later in the day, the National Weather Service announced the day's high temperature of 37 was a new record for the lowest maximum temperature for the date, beating the old record by one degree set in 1890, 1987, and 1971, the Boston Herald reported.

Simpson told the Globe that the cold weather won't go anywhere for now, with the Arctic system lingering through the week with temperatures gradually increasing as it dissipates.

"People should expect to have below-average temperatures for the foreseeable future," he added.

Record lows were recorded all around the region from Vermont to Ohio on Saturday, according to a Twitter post from the National Weather Service. Some of those records included 18 in Allentown, Pennsylvania (old record 19 in 1956); 21 in Atlantic City, New Jersey (old record 22 in 1978); 20 in Cleveland (old record 21 in 1957); 18 in Martinsburg, West Virginia (old record 19 in 1973); 24 in New York City Central Park (old record 28 in 1933); 15 in Springfield, Vermont (old record 18 in 2003) and 20 in Washington, D.C. (old record 22 in 1961).

Many in Boston shared their feelings about the chilly temperatures on social media.
