There are more than 50,000 bridges in the U.S. that are falling apart, posing a serious threat to road users, said a report from a business association representing bridge builders.

The finding by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association used government data to establish that at least 54,259 of the nation’s 612,677 bridges were currently deemed as “structurally deficient.”

If these bridges were to be placed end-to-end, they would almost stretch across the distance between Miami and New York City, the report said, adding that cars, trucks and school buses crossed the compromised structures 175 million times daily.

NBC News reported it investigated the potential hazards and found there were cases in which pieces of crumbling bridges had broken off and fallen into the roadway, even hitting vehicles at times.

One Utah driver, Mike Peterson, was driving under a bridge when a piece of the structure broke off and smashed through his window.

He was able to avoid serious injury, but “another six to eight inches, you might not be talking to me today,” he noted, per NBC News.

The findings came as President Donald Trump was about to deliver his “State of the Union” address in which he was expected to speak about the nation’s infrastructure challenges.

Trump has said that a long-awaited program to address the U.S.’s crumbling infrastructure would be revealed then, with a full plan to follow shortly thereafter, The Guardian reported.

Speaking in front of city mayors gathered at the White House, Trump said: “We’re also working to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure by stimulating a $1 trillion investment,” which he added could end up expanding to $1.7 trillion.

Trump said he was partnering with state and local governments “to find the most innovative ways to rebuild our roads, bridges, waterways, and airports.”
