Among the 90 percent of Americans who celebrate Christmas, 55 percent view it as a religious holiday. That figure includes 46 percent who see it primarily as a religious celebration and 9 percent who see it as both a religious and cultural event.

The figures are down slightly from 2013, when 58 percent celebrated Christmas in religious terms.

Today, 33 percent celebrate Christmas primarily as a secular or cultural holiday. That’s up a percentage point from four years ago.

The Pew Research Center also found a slight decline in belief of the biblical account of Jesus’ birth. Still, 66 percent believe he was born to a virgin, 75 percent believe he was laid in a manger, 68 percent believe wise men brought him gifts, and 67 percent believe angels announced his birth.
