Airbus Unveils More Fuel-Efficient Passenger Jet

The Farnborough International Show in England opened this week with the announcement by Airbus Industries that it was developing an airplane that could achieve far greater fuel efficiency than previous models.

At a news conference on July 14, Boeing's major European competitor unveiled the A330neo, the "latest evolution" of its long-haul A330 passenger jet product line.

The A330 will provide 14 percent greater fuel efficiency, a result of incorporating new Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, and utilizing aerodynamic improvements and the latest in the company’s cabin technology to provide "unmatched operating economics."

"We worked out a solution that keeps the maturity, keeps the simplicity, keeps all that the customers like about the A330 family – and on top improves the fuel-burn per seat by 14 percent," Airbus President and Chief Executive Officer Fabrice Brégier said in an announcement released by Airbus.

Airbus also released a video detailing the improvements.

The new version also boosts its seating capacity to 310 passengers.

Matt Yglesias of Vox notes that because fuel consumption is a major contributor to the cost of flights, the benefits could come to the consumer and the environment and shows "an industry getting better at efficiency across the board."
