Democrats Preaching to the Choir Need to Focus on Policymaking

Democrats Preaching to the Choir Need to Focus on Policymaking

Democratic politicians and pundits commit the same mistake every day.

They preach to the choir.

Instead of telling me and other yellow dog Democrats about the horrors of Donald Trump, try explaining what the Democrats can and will do to improve America.

Politicians and pundits love to talk, but they rarely listen. I listen to people on the bus, in the post office, on the subway (when we’re stuck between stops) and at coffee shop counters (there are still a few remaining in New York City). These are the best polling stations imaginable because people are not afraid to speak honestly.

Americans are extremely unhappy with the country’s antiquated infrastructure. Our airports, trains, and buses are neglected while hardworking Americans suffer a miserable daily commute. If a cross section of bombastic politicians and overpaid pundits were forced to ride NJ Transit or use La Guardia Airport daily, we’d already be in the process of rebuilding America.

There is a healthcare crisis in our country.

Although altruistic and well-intentioned, Obamacare is dysfunctional and poorly administrated. Democrats refuse to acknowledge that Obamacare is a weak Band-Aid that must be reformed and promising more of the same will certainly not create a Blue Wave in November or elect a Democratic president in 2020.

Trump’s pledge to repeal Obamacare worked as a referendum and it’s one of the reasons he won the presidency, yet he has neither repealed nor replaced it. Democrats must push to reform healthcare in a bipartisan manner or there will always be a loud, disgruntled group demanding change.

Americans want jobs.

Joe Biden’s weepy promises of a free two-year college education for all would have been a nice pitch in the 1970’s, but it’s useless now. Technology and robotics will dominate the future and it would be wise for politicians to focus on jobs in those fields. Military technology is changing dramatically (see: my recent Newsmax piece), and advocating a transition from analogue to digital defense could be a first step for Democrats in what is usually a Republican stronghold.

No one wants to pay more in taxes, especially when their money is misspent by federal, state, and local governments. Americans believe the government is bloated and don’t trust politicians as capable stewards of their tax dollars, yet Democrats continue to push tax increases as a key issue. Perhaps it’s time to focus on real tax reform rather than blaming the wealthy for economic inequality. Mark Zuckerberg gave $100 million to the Newark school system, yet the city’s Mayor admits the money was spent “unwisely.” In other words, it’s gone.

Donald Trump is a narcissist, a liar, and a petty despot who is wildly corrupt and a danger to our country. So is New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio, and it will take much more than him, Cory Booker, Kamala Harris and Joe Biden to galvanize the Democratic Party.

Wake up Democrats or get used to another four years of Donald Trump.
