The Mind of an Anglo-Saxon Australian Reading My Book Online

Thursday, 22 May 2003 12:00 AM EDT

Having read the first two installments of my book online (www.levnavrozov.com), Paul Edwards, who introduces himself as an "Anglo-Saxon Australian,” has sent me a three-page e-mail and a four-page attachment.

He seems never to have read what I have been writing. Instead, he presents his own vision of geostrategy, according to which, taking into account the recent glorious military victory of the United States, Britain and Australia in Iraq, "with very few casualties, we will probably be able to convert the entire world into liberal democracies.”

But has Iraq been converted to "liberal democracy”? Under Hussein, Shi’a were kept in check by the Sunni, more Western and less fundamentalist than Shi’a, who account for up to 65 percent of the Iraqi Moslems, and hence Iraq’s "democracy” can only be less liberal than Hussein’s dictatorship, with his reliance on the Sunni.

Recently a mainstream TV guest, an Englishman, the author of the book entitled "Empire,” preached a global conquest, similarly to Mr. Edwards, except that he called the result a world empire and argued that the British Empire had disintegrated because the United States was against it, and now, thank God, the Americans had come to their senses and – voilà! – the American Empire!

He said, however, that Iraq would be converted to (liberal) democracy in a century or so. Recall the British Empire, which operated in terms of centuries!

But will Iraq be converted to Western (liberal) democracy in a century? Will democracy survive in a century in Australia? The word "democracy” originated in Athens, but democracy and the word were gone for more than a millennium and a half, and began reappearing in London, not in Athens.

Democracy – or freedom, if you will – is only a means for spiritual life, for art, for culture. The Shi’a have at least their Islam. What do the Australians have owing to democracy? Possibly the greatest Australian poet in the past century is A.D. Hope, who writes in his poem "Australia”:

A.D. Hope concludes his poem by saying that Australia is like a woman within whom "the womb is dry.” Mr. Edwards is absolutely sure that Australia must help to extend what A. D. Hope perceives as spiritual death onto the entire world – let it be the last one, the emptiest, like a woman within whom the womb is dry.

The British Empire, through wars, spread the Western (British) way of life for centuries. The Empire failed. Take India, for example.

A key word of the way of life of the Western nations, including England and Australia, is "work,” which is paid, of course, and becomes cars, houses and other "property,” also a key word.

In India, the daily gross domestic product per capita is 4 dollars 52 cents. This includes everything – food, rent, government (in particular, military) expenses. The key word of the Hindus (80 percent of the population of India) is "nirvana” – no work, no property, a kind of poetic-religious daydreaming, the opposite of the Western way of life, of its goal, of its vision of happiness.

The fundamentalist Shi’a or the nirvana Hindus and Mr. Edwards cannot live in the same society. Mr. Edwards is horrified by a non-Western society ruled along the lines of absolutism or, still worse, theocracy, and I understand him, since I lived under Soviet absolutism. The Shi’a and Hindus are horrified by Australia, and A.D. Hope can understand

But unfortunately, some people want to force all nations through wars to live as they do. While many non-Westerners do not want to accept the Western way of life, many of them also want to deprive the Westerners of it by war.

If Mr. Edwards looks forward to Western wars, similar to those waged by the British Empire, why should not the owners of China look forward to their post-nuclear war to impose their way of life on the world? What if the Islamic world, India, and perhaps even continental Western Europe and Russia, ally with China and against the Anglo-Saxon empire on the global offensive?

I have contended that the democratic West was endangered by Soviet Russia in the 1980s, and is endangered by China more than it was endangered by Hitler in 1938, when the majority of the democratic West regarded him as a great statesman and a champion of peace.

But Hitler made a mistake. Instead of concentrating on the development of nuclear weapons, he launched conventional war in 1939 and hence had no sufficient resources to develop the "atom bomb” ahead of the United States.

Later, Soviet Russia and China did not launch conventional war but concentrated on the development of post-nuclear superweapons. The democratic West may perish any day, and liberal democracy in Iraq in a hundred years will not help.

Mr. Edwards proclaims that China will be "a democracy in about 20 years.” Why? The Chinese "are natural capitalists.” But so were Germans before and under Hitler.

Mr. Edwards explains that his wife is from Mainland China. As for me, I "have probably assumed that the Chinese are like the Russians.” Here Mr. Edwards pours on "the Russians” a torrent of invective, similar to that which an anti-Semite pours on "the Jews” or a White supremacist on "the Negroes” or "the non-Whites” in general.

Mr. Edwards sounds not like a liberal democrat, but like a Nazi. His goal is to demonstrate what a superior race "the Chinese” are as compared with those whom Nazis called "the Russian swine.”

No wonder Mr. Edwards writes in conclusion that "the most likely scenario is that China will naturally become a democracy and naturally become an ally (just a bigger version of Taiwan).” Curiously, an ally against whom? Against those Russian swine Mr. Edwards described as the opposite of the Chinese?

Nevertheless, despite this glorious prediction, Mr. Edwards follows it up by referring to "the subtle military campaign that is being waged ‘just in case.’ A campaign that incidentally now has U.S. forces on China’s border via both Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan.”

So, this is what is really going on! We thought that the United States had been militarily preoccupied with a non-nuclear midget like Iraq. But no! "Just in case,” U.S. troops are on China’s border! Imagine them invading China as they did Iraq!

Never mind the Chinese nuclear arsenal and the missiles reaching Europe and the United States! What are nuclear warheads for the U.S. troops and U.S. cities? Imagine hundreds of millions of Chinese guerrillas, apart from regular troops. As for the Chinese post-nuclear superweapons, the CIA does not seem even to have heard of such. But who and what can stop in China the U.S. troops if they were unstoppable in Iraq?

The moral of Mr. Edwards is that in contrast to the Russian swine, China is destined to be a democracy and an ally of the West. She’d better! Or else! There are U.S. troops on China’s border. Forward, March!
