One Reporter's Opinion: Frosty Warnings

Friday, 16 May 2003 12:00 AM EDT

It is this reporter's opinion that one of our greatest challenges is the world's population explosion. Recently I interviewed Frosty Wooldridge of Colorado, who has become an expert on the subject.

Before we got to that, Frosty shared with our audience some of his experiences concerning the health and medical consequences of uninvited illegal aliens pouring into our society while the politically correct look the other way.

He told a shocking story of the serious afflictions and diseases reintroduced to our society. We had stomped out tuberculosis; leprosy was unheard of, not to mention all of the childhood diseases. Now we confront SARS and our inability to cope with it – there is no cure.

But then Frosty went on to talk about the population rampage. In the past 10 years, the world has added 880 million people. America alone has added 30 million. Today America numbers 288 million and is growing by 3.3 million per year! In 50 years, the world population will grow from 8.2 billion to 9.8 billion and we will add 200 million. An average of 8,200 people are added to our country every day via annual net gains in U.S. births at 1 million and immigration at 2 million – legal, illegal and those they give birth to.

Just after the mid-century, 200 million more Americans will be struggling for dwindling resources - water, food and a diminishing quality of life. One only need look at India and China for a frightening story. Four million people are born in the streets, live in the streets, die in the streets, never having used a toilet or a shower. China's plight: 1.3 billion and growing at 12 million per year.

There is no question about it: Overpopulation, uncontrolled population, will be the plague of the 21st century. According to "60 Minutes," we have 1 million homeless children struggling in our inner cities. We can't take care of their needs even today. What will be the fate of another 200 million people who create homeless children?

When will we Americans, who pride ourselves on being able to cope with all problems, address the facts? When will the politicians, who scurry like cockroaches at the mention of population stabilization, become realistic, if only to save their own necks?

We face consequences in every corner of our nation, striving to deal with escalating water, air and land dilemmas ... and water polluted with industrial chemicals, acid rains pounding our lakes with chemicals, cities with thick clouds where millions of children breathe carcinogens with every breath ... and yet we fail to act. By failing to do so, what consequences will we as a nation face when we hit half a billion people?

With 100 percent more cars, 77 percent more traffic, 77 percent more planes in the air, 77 percent increased pollution, 77 percent faster use of such limited resources as gasoline, paving over 3,000 acres of land each day for homes, roads and malls ... with each new added American, 12.8 acres of wilderness plowed up to support that person, in the next 10 years, according to the National Academy of Sciences, 2,500 plants and animals will become extinct in the USA because of habitat destruction and population growth.

Fifty years ago Bangladesh, India and China ignored their accelerating populations. Today our so-called leaders are following the same path. And yet our porous borders admit hundreds of thousands of people – impoverished, uneducated, non-productive – to suck out our life's blood.

We need IMMEDIATE immigration reform and reduction to 150,000 people annually before population momentum takes us to another 200 million Americans and a completely unstable society.

Frosty Wooldridge offers frightening statistics. Let's face them and ACT before it's too late.
