One Reporter's Opinion: Bloomberg in Never-Never Land

Friday, 30 May 2003 12:00 AM EDT

It is this reporter's opinion that the mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, has lost touch with reality.

On a recent talk show, he said:

"Make everyone who is here and undocumented, make them citizens! Let's get on with it! They'll become taxpayers, productive members of society."

And he went on:

"Every economic study that has been done actually says undocumented people [illegals] contribute more to society than they get in terms of services. If you remember, just before 9/11 President Bush was basically proposing just what I said. He originally talked about Mexican immigrants, but I think everybody recognized that would be extended to all people here illegally."

The mayor didn't stop there; he added:

"We want those people to be engaged, get medical care so they aren't sick, get their kids into school so their kids don't get into trouble later on. The problem is not to put your head in the sand; they're here and they're going to stay here and I'd rather turn them into productive citizens than leave the status quo."

This, mind you, from Mayor Michael Bloomberg, speaking from the pristine protectiveness of Gracie Square on the East River in Manhattan. Let the good mayor change his location for a few moments and rub armpits with the rest of us.

Recently, I interviewed Frosty Wooldridge, former U.S. Army officer, teacher and author, who has cycled 100,000 miles on six continents to witness overpopulation up close and ugly. America, it's coming to us. It's coming fast, Mayor!

Frosty told me we're facing a horrible crisis, that we are being overrun and overwhelmed by mass immigration of 2.3 million annually. His message, plain and clear, is that overpopulation will be the plague of the 21st century in America. He says that we will add 200 million Americans just past the year 2050 at the current growth rate of 3.3 million per year.

These overloading numbers will bring us into the same arena as present-day Bangladesh, India and China. We are following their footsteps. It's being driven by 2.3 million pouring into our country each year - legally, illegally, and with high birth rates.

The American female fertility rate stands at 2.03 babies in her lifetime. This means we would be stable without unrestricted immigration. Yet our southern borders are being invaded by 800,000 illegal aliens each year, with as many as 15 million currently in the U.S. This is depressing wages for our working poor; the illegals are stealing the jobs in the construction industry, hotel, restaurant and trades. American workers are being swept aside.

And those illegals do not pay taxes; most are paid under the table. They use services but do not pay for them. Hospitals are closing or going bankrupt from the financial stress of serving those who cannot pay. The schools are overcrowded and out of control.

What's worse is that illegal aliens are not screened by health care facilities. Thus, we have 16,000 new cases of MDR and TB; 7,000 new cases of leprosy; thousands of cases of hepatitis; and we are importing a health care crisis fed by millions of illegals.

Communication alone is a huge problem. Schools across the nation are trying to teach to over 70 different languages. They are failing. Moral and ethical values are cast aside. Our southern borders not only allow those 800,000 illegals to cross annually; they also bring drugs, guns, disease and God only knows how many terrorists.

Why doesn't our government place troops on the border to end this INVASION? Over 25 percent of our jail inmates across the country are legal and illegal aliens. Why aren't they screened and cleared of criminal activity

Visas are given out to 890,000 foreigners, which means 890,000 of OUR citizens would have those jobs; 50,000 diversity visas are given out each year to countries with known terror connections. And with the better than 6 percent rate of unemployment, can someone please explain the reasoning behind H-1B visas?*

Our leaders and politicians at all levels and much of the media are not addressing this tragic invasion of our country. Who is driving all this and for what reason? Where will we be when we reach the density of Bangladesh? How can we maintain our principles, our functioning society? And how about the basics - clean water, air and food?

How can the mayor of our largest city suggest that all of these illegals be made citizens of our beloved country? It is just plain insanity!

Frosty Wooldridge, Rep. Tom Tancredo, Former Gov. Dick Lamb, Colorado

Dr. Warren Washington, Dr. Lynn Veeser, Dr. Albert Bartlett, University of Colorado ... and dozens of others.

*What is the H-1B visa? - The H-1B visa is a visa that allows a person who is not a United States citizen or permanent resident to work temporarily in the United States in certain occupations, provided s/he possesses certain qualifications. For more information, go to: http://www.h1bvisalaw.com
