Neither Lenin nor Stalin nor Hitler ever assassinated a single prominent foreigner in a hostile powerful country. To them, such assassinations would have been too petty, risky and geostrategically counterproductive. They thought in terms of world domination, and the assassination of Churchill, Roosevelt, Truman or Sen. McCarthy would have been, in their view, useless or harmful to the cause.
It would have been absurd in their view, for example, to send 19 suicidal desperados into a foreign country in order to assassinate, say, 3,000 random civilians and 200 Pentagon officials.
Hitler’s bombers reduced to ruins an entire English city, Coventry, and Hitler threatened to do the same to all of civilian England. But even such wholesale annihilations of civilians every night produced a zero intimidation effect.
Inversely, when it was clear that Hitler’s Germany had lost the war, a merry pop song blared from the Soviet radio:
Yet the Soviet troops had to take Berlin by storm. It was only U.S. nuclear bombs killing 400,000 civilians that made the rulers of Japan surrender, since they did not know how many nuclear bombs the United States had.
On the other hand, there were assassination attempts on Lenin (who was badly wounded, which was perhaps one of the causes of his death), on Stalin (who took paranoiac precautions against them) and on Hitler (who narrowly escaped death).
But though the British and Soviet intelligence blabbed a lot after the war about their wartime plans of assassinating Hitler, the assassination attempts on him were made by individuals having no connection with any government or a "terrorist organization,” just as the nearly successful assassination attempt on Lenin was made by Fanny Kaplan on her own initiative and involving no one except her.
Yet while even Lenin, Stalin and Hitler were never engaged in terrorism in hostile or enemy countries, 62 percent of Americans believe, according to public opinion polls, that the assassination of about 3,200 Americans on Sept. 11, 2001, is the handiwork of … no, no longer of bin Laden’s al-Qaeda, but of Saddam Hussein’s Iraq!
But if Lenin, Stalin and Hitler abstained from terrorism, why on earth would Hussein have used it? If the United States had obtained any evidence of his involvement, it would have nuked his Iraq then and there. Or would have invaded it and deprived him of his power and wealth to begin with.
So 62 percent of Americans polled believe that while Lenin, Stalin and Hitler were too cautious as far as terrorism is concerned, Hussein was a reckless, fearless, suicidal daredevil, ready to bring on himself the well-justified and fully predictable wrath of the United States, whose GNP exceeds Iraq’s 100 times!
Why this absurd delusion on the part of 62 percent of Americans polled? The fact is that the U.S. officials "prosecuting the war on terror” and the TV guests pontificating about terrorism know nothing about its psychology and psychiatry. It seemed to them that the danger of suicidal terrorism comes not from suicidal individuals, but from governments, which should be overthrown as in Afghanistan or Iraq or replaced as in Palestine.
It is the same as to imagine that common murderers (and there are more than 1,000 murders a month in the United States) are "trained, financed and guided” by foreign governments or huge "terrorist organizations” like Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda.
The difference between a common murderer and a suicidal terrorist is that the former is motivated by common passions, such as greed, jealousy or hatred, and hence the common murder rate is more or less constant (despite all the efforts of the FBI to reduce it), while the motivation of a suicidal terrorist is not common, and hence here there were about 3,200 people murdered in the United States once in two centuries (and the CIA and the FBI had not detected the 19 murderers and perhaps will not detect them next time around – tomorrow or in 10 years).
The annual number of those who commit suicide in a country is a fairly constant figure – about 30,000 a year in the United States. More than twice as many men commit suicide as do women.
It is clear that the cause of suicide is genetic and it is little affected by unhappy events or bad living conditions making a man or a woman miserable. Surely the life of American men is not more miserable than that of American women, who have on the average less money, have to worry about unwanted pregnancies and difficult and sometimes fatal childbirth, and are often still mistreated by physically stronger men.
A person genetically inclined to suicide often invents or imagines its noble or beautiful cause. Thus he kills a "woman he loved” without reciprocity and himself: The cause is "unrequited love.” Very beautiful in the West ever since Goethe’s "Werther.” Today, opera-goers in the West and in Russia still weep as they listen to Werther’s aria before his suicide.
A week ago, a New Yorker named Robert Ambrosino, 33, a former merchant marine aspiring to be a firefighter, accosted in the street his "unrequited love,” Lyric, 21, aspiring to be an actress, shot her, and then "pumped a bullet into his own head.”
What is interesting about this New York "Werther” is that the aspiring firefighter invented the Werther part of his suicide. It is true that at the beginning of the year he amicably shared a Brooklyn apartment with Lyric. But then they parted as amicably, and neither expressed any regrets or sought to resume their relations, and both were very cheerful, according to the neighbors.
Yet, of course, it is so much more beautiful to commit suicide because of unrequited love, Werther-style, than because of genetic predisposition. If and when political struggle becomes as beautifully fashionable in the United States as unrequited love has been for centuries, hundreds or thousands of political Werthers will not be shooting their allegedly unrequited loves, but will instead be blasting American civilians in the style of a born and bred American named Timothy McVeigh (though President Kennedy was shot by a born and bred American, not blown up, for reasons hardly distinguishable from those that motivated Ambrosino to kill his alleged unrequited love).
The Russian semi-constitutional monarchy of Alexander II launched the culturally freest and most creative epoch in the history of Russia, which produced Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky and Chekhov in letters. But terrorists assassinated even Alexander II himself. The beautiful fashion was the medieval rural community to which Russia was to return through terrorist bombs and bullets.
The reason for a genetically suicidal person’s sublimation of his or her suicide is that even when committing suicide a human being remains ambitious, representing himself or herself in the best light, thirsty for glory and, in the case of a devout Muslim male, yearning for the Islamic paradise, which has little to do with the Christian paradise of Dante.
The sublimation of suicide is a matter of personal whim and cultural fashion, and hence the occurrence of suicidal terrorism is anything but constant – it is whimsical, sporadic, statistically unpredictable.
The Islamic world has existed for about 13 centuries, as long as has post-Roman Europe. But before Sept. 11, 2001, there had been not a single Islamic terrorist act in the West in which several thousand people had been killed. It is not impossible that no such act will recur for another 13 centuries – or it might recur tomorrow at 9 a.m., with a subsequent long argument between the CIA, FBI and the U.S. government as to who is to blame for the failure to prevent it.
We can only speak of probabilities of Islamic suicidal terrorism and state what enhances such probabilities, such as the "pre-emptive” occupation of Iraq and the threats to Syria and Iran.
There is a strong opinion in the United States (and in Israel) that while no vigilance prevents over 1,000 common murders a month in the United States, terrorists are somehow detectable (with due vigilance and a bureaucracy employing 170,000 officials). Well, they are not.
Until the mid-20th century no one knew the phrase "Islamic suicidal terrorism.” The sublimation of suicides into terrorist acts came about in the Islamic world (first in Palestine) only in the second half of the 20th century.
Moslems are freer and better off in Israel than in many Moslem countries. But a suicidal terrorist is preoccupied with his beautiful death, not with his life in Israel, Saudi Arabia (where Mohammad lived), in Europe or in the United States.
Life is not worth living anywhere except in the Islamic paradise, where a suicidal terrorist, who sublimated his suicide into a heroic exploit in the holy war on infidels, will live deflowering beautiful virgins, each of whom will regain her virginity by the time he deflowers other beautiful virgins so that the deflowering will go on eternally.
Let us now look up the U.S. statistics on "forcible rape.” Striking again is the constancy of the number: about 100,000 a year. The magnitude is also striking: So, every year about 100,000 Americans risk spending the rest of their lives in prison – for the sake of what? Not for the sake of $10 million from a bank vault, which will attract many women. But for the sake of one fleeting, messy, hasty experience with one woman, more dead than alive with fear and/or hatred. A large percentage of rapists are sexual maniacs.
And now let us sample a young Moslem out of those 150,000 Moslem men who commit suicide annually. He cannot marry because rich Moslems have up to four wives, and hence no wife or mistress has been left for him. This is a fertile soil for sexual mania, but the latter takes a different course than in the case of an American rapist.
Just as many Europeans of Dante’s time believed with Dante in the Christian paradise in the direct physical sense, many Moslems believe today in the Islamic paradise in that same sense. Except that Dante’s paradise was a triumph of asexual spirituality, and the Islamic paradise is a triumph of carnal sexuality.
To an Islamic sexual maniac, forcible rape is a sexually pathetic experience: Through his coveted blissful death and the killing of infidels along with himself, he ascends to the Islamic paradise, where he does not have to force any woman – the ravishing beauties tremble with the desire to be deflowered by him, and his deflowering of them never ends, free from fatigue and other earthly impediments.
