Democrats have a 6-point lead over Republicans on a generic congressional ballot ahead of November's midterm elections, according to a new poll.
The Economist/YouGov survey released Wednesday found 45 percent of registered voters said they would vote for a Democrat in their district, while 39 percent said they would vote for a Republican.
Broken down by party, 92 percent of Democrats responded they would vote for a Democrat, and 88 percent of Republicans said they would vote for a GOP candidate.
Among Independents, 32 percent said they would vote for a Democrat, and 33 percent said they would vote for a Republican.
Another 24 percent of Independents are undecided.
Asked their preference for control of Congress, 33 percent of registered voters said they want Democrats in control; 34 percent want Republicans to continue to lead Congress.
The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
The poll tracks closely to a RealClearPolitics averaging of generic ballot surveys that show Democrats with a 6.7-point lead.
