Former Democrat presidential primary candidate Andrew Yang appears to be testing a possible New York City mayoral run either as an independent or Democrat, Politico reported.
Yang was among 11 people listed in a Survey Monkey online survey of responders’ top picks in a June 2021 Democratic primary to succeed Mayor Bill de Blasio, the news outlet reported.
Politico, citing an unnamed source who participated in the poll, reported the survey didn’t indicate it was being conducted on Yang’s behalf. But several questions focused on his potential candidacy, and others asked respondents to gauge a nameless candidate whose description closely matched Yang’s profile, Politico reported.
The poll was aimed at “exploring Yang’s viability both in the Democratic primary and as an independent candidate, but that they are very seriously considering an independent candidacy,” Politico quoted its source saying.
Another suggestion the survey was testing was a question about specific policies Yang’s championed, such as providing people a monthly cash payment of $1,000, his main pitch as a presidential candidate.
