A group of women scientists rebuked Bill Nye, "The Science Guy," for agreeing to attend the State of the Union address as guest of NASA chief nominee Rep. Jim Bridenstine, saying it "tacitly endorses" the administration's anti-science stance.
In a commentary posted Tuesday by Scientific American, the group, 500 Women Scientists, wrote "no amount of funding for space exploration can undo the damage the Trump administration is causing to public health and welfare by censoring science."
Nye was invited to the address as a guest of the Oklahoma Republican who, as President Donald Trump's nominee to head NASA, has been criticized by some lawmakers for his lack of a formal science education.
Nye has said his attendance should not be seen as an endorsement of the president's "recent attacks on science and the scientific community," The Washington Times reported. But the women scientists wrote that Nye "has tacitly endorsed those very policies" and "put his own personal brand over the interests of the scientific community at large."
