A Wisconsin judge has blocked an order from Democratic Gov. Tony Evers restricting the number of people who can enter an indoor space, as a new wave of coronavirus cases overtakes the state, according to the Associated Press.
The order was temporarily blocked after an alcohol trade association Tavern League of Wisconsin protested the rule which capped bars or restaurants to 25 customers at one time.
The governor's emergency order took effect last Thursday and was scheduled to go through Nov. 6. Anyone who violated the order was subject to a fine of up to $500.
The order exempted churches, colleges, day cares, schools and health care facilities.
The Tavern League of Wisconsin accused Evers of issuing a ''de facto closure'' for businesses. The governor said the measure was needed to curb coronavirus numbers in Wisconsin over the past few weeks.
On Tuesday, Wisconsin reported 3,279 new coronavirus cases, including 34 deaths.
''Make no mistake, if this dangerous decision stands, Wisconsin will be choosing full bars over full classrooms,'' Democratic Sen. LaTonya Johnson, of Milwaukee tweeted. ''What a pathetic set of priorities to teach our children.''
