Former Wisconsin GOP Gov. Tommy Thompson, who has signaled an interest in running for Senate next year, once was seen as a rising conservative. But now conservatives are attacking him,
Politico reports.

His welfare reform work as the Badger State’s governor, a job he held from 1987 to 2001, was seen as a template for Republicans in the 1990s. But now conservatives call him an enthusiast of the new healthcare law.
The Club for Growth, which seeks lower taxes and less government, has led the onslaught against Thompson. The club called his possible Senate run an April Fool’s joke and created an Internet video showing 2009 comments from President Barack Obama mentioning Thompson’s support for his healthcare reform.
