Texas Republican Rep. Will Hurd's district stretches 800 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border — the longest of any congressional district — but he said Wednesday night he opposes President Donald Trump's executive order to begin construction of a border wall.
"Building a wall is the most expensive and least effective way to secure the border," The Washington Post reports Hurd as saying. "Each section of the border faces unique geographical, cultural, and technological challenges that would be best addressed with a flexible, sector-by-sector approach that empowers the agents on the ground with the resources they need."
"Big Bend National Park and many areas in my district are perfect examples of where a wall is unnecessary and would negatively impact the environment, private property rights and economy," Hurd said, adding that he favors an "intelligence-led approach" in border protection.
But Hurd's criticism wasn't a surprise. He vowed during his re-election campaign to stand up against Trump. Hurd's district is competitive — and majority Hispanic.
He beat Democratic challenger Pete Gallego by fewer than 4,000 votes.
