The White House would not say Monday when it will seek to defund Planned Parenthood in the wake of the House GOP's failed bid to pass a new piece of healthcare legislation.

Press secretary Sean Spicer told the assembled media at the White House the American Health Care Act was the first opportunity for President Donald Trump to sever federal ties with the organization that provides abortions.

Spicer was asked if Trump would include Planned Parenthood defunding in a government spending bill next month that needs to be passed in order to fund the government. According to The Hill, some Republicans are in favor of this action.

"I think he's made very clear what his position is on Planned Parenthood. And obviously this was an opportunity to defund it," Spicer said. "But I don't want to get ahead of our legislative strategy. We'll look at other opportunities, but this was definitely one that was a way to make that happen."

Trump called out the House Freedom Caucus, a group of Republican lawmakers who did not support the American Health Care Act, last Friday morning and again on Sunday for helping to continue federal funding for Planned Parenthood because of their opposition to the healthcare bill.

It was reported earlier this month that the White House offered Planned Parenthood a deal: Stop performing abortions and we'll continue the flow of federal funds. The organization shot down the offer.
