White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday she was "not aware" of any plans by President Donald Trump to pardon former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn — saying any such discussion would be premature at this point.

"I'm not aware that has come up or any process or decision on that front," she told reporters at the daily briefing. "No, I haven't asked the president whether or not he would do that.

"Before we start discussing pardons for individuals, we should see what happens in specific cases," she added.

When pressed further, Sanders responded: "I haven't the conversation with him because I don't feel it's necessary until you get further down the road and determine whether or not that's even something that's needed."

Flynn pleaded guilty Friday to lying to the FBI about his Russia contacts in the probe headed by special counsel Robert Mueller.

He is cooperating with investigators and faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

Trump fired Flynn in February amid questions about his Moscow disclosures to Vice President Mike Pence.

"The president knew that he lied to the vice president," Sanders said Tuesday. "That was the reason for his firing."

However, she referred questions about an erroneous tweet drafted Sunday by John Dowd, one of the president's personal lawyers, suggesting Trump knew Flynn had lied to the FBI when he fired him.

The post raised new questions about the president's dismissal of FBI Director James Comey in May.

Dowd took responsibility for the error, telling Axios later Sunday: "I'm out of the tweeting business."
