Washington Post editor Marty Baron has dismissed claims by President Donald Trump that Amazon exercises editorial control over his newspaper.
"It's completely made up. There isn't anybody here who is paid by Amazon. Not one penny," Baron told The New York Times.
Trump has been on a tweeting tear over Amazon, the internet retailing giant whose billionaire founder Jeff Bezos also owns The Post. He calls the newspaper the "Amazon Washington Post" and says it should be classified as a lobbying firm instead of a news outfit.
But Baron — whose previous leadership at The Boston Globe earned that paper a Pulitzer for uncovering a Catholic Church sex abuse scandal chronicled in the acclaimed movie "Spotlight'' — insisted Bezos is strictly hands off as far as The Post's editorial content goes.
"I can't say more emphatically he's never suggested a story to anybody here, he's never critiqued a story, he's never suppressed a story," Baron said.
"Frankly, in a newsroom of 800 journalists, if that had occurred, I guarantee you, you would have heard about it. Newsrooms tend not to like those kinds of interventions, particularly a newsroom that's as proud as The Washington Post.
"If he had been involved in our news coverage, you can be sure that you would have heard about it by now. It hasn't happened. Period."
Trump has been extremely critical for The Post's aggressive coverage of his administration.
