Nicole Wallace: GOP Move to Defund Obamacare 'Stupid Politically'

By    |   Thursday, 19 Sep 2013 12:53 PM

The Republican push to defund Obamacare and risk a government shutdown is "idiotic," not to mention just plain "stupid," former White House Communications Director Nicole Wallace said Thursday.

Comparing the unfolding events on Capitol Hill to a 2-year-old running into busy traffic, the Republican said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that GOP leaders have to start acting like responsible parents to avert disaster by reining in tea party members of their conference determined to kill the healthcare law.

If the parent didn't hold onto the child, she said, "he would get squished."

"When Republicans run into the street, despite the fact that there is a flashing red light, they will get hit by the cars and killed," she added, noting that Republicans are sure to be blamed if their opposition to Obamacare shuts down the government.

Wallace, who was senior assistant to former President George W. Bush, acknowledged that GOP proponents of defunding Obamacare, such as Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, are "responding to a genuine sentiment out there." But she insisted it was "stupid at a policy level because . . . it has no chance to succeed."

She also noted that the timing is bad because Republicans of late have been on the offensive, scoring political points against the president and the Democrats on a variety of issues.

"Now we'll let our party run into moving traffic against a red light? It's idiotic," she said, noting again that Republicans will get most of the blame if Congress fails to pass a spending bill by Oct 1.
