Democrats' victory in the Virginia governor's race has buoyed their optimism for next year's midterms while giving ammunition to anti-establishment Republicans, The Washington Post reports.

All over a state that had just one Republican governor in the last five elections and was a battleground state that Hillary Clinton won last year.

But both sides need their talking points, and President Donald Trump is the common denominator.

"Donald Trump is an anchor for the GOP," strategist and Trump critic Mike Murphy told the Post. "We got that message in loud volume in Virginia. The canary in the coal mine didn’t just pass out; its head exploded."

Democrat Ralph Northam defeated Ed Gillespie by 9 points in a state that's more blue than purple, meaning it was a chalk win for the Democrats.

"Democrats say this is a repudiation and this is an anti-Trump vote, but to me the case doesn’t stick," said Robin Hayes, chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, told the Post.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who was the last Republican standing against Trump during the GOP primary, said Virginia was a lesson for Republicans.

"This is a repudiation of the politics of narrow," Kasich said, the Post reported. "The politics of anger may work for a moment in time, but it does not last, thank goodness."

"Establishment Republicans are blaming Trump and talking about Armageddon, but what is their alternative?" Andy Surabian, associate of former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon, told the Post.
