Fifty-two percent of likely voters in the United States are pro-choice on the topic of abortion, while 50 percent believe that abortion is morally wrong most of the time, according to a Rasmussen poll.

In the poll of 1,000 likely voters conducted Nov. 21 and 22:

  • Pro-choice: 52 percent.
  • Pro-life: 42 percent.

As to the question of whether the practice is morally wrong:

  • Morally wrong most of the time: 50 percent.
  • Morally acceptable most of the time: 34 percent.
  • Undecided: 17 percent.

Breaking down the poll's results by party affiliation:

  • Pro-choice, Democrats: 74 percent.
  • Pro-choice, not affiliated with either party: 54 percent.
  • Pro-life, Republicans: 69 percent.

The number of voters who said they are pro-choice is down from a Rasmussen poll in April where 54 percent said they were. The number that said they are pro-life is at its highest level since July 2014, according to the poll results.

Seventy percent of voters said their opinions on abortion would be somewhat important, at least, to how they voted. Forty percent of those said the issue was "very important," according to Rasmussen.

The Christian Post reported on a separate poll about abortion by the pro-life lobbying group Susan B. Anthony List. The poll results showed that eight out of 10 millennial American voters favor a ban on late-term abortions. It also showed that seven out of 10 African Americans favor the ban.

Pope Francis weighed in last week on the morality of the abortion issue, giving priests the authority to forgive those who have had abortions.

"I wish to restate as firmly as I can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life. However, I can and must state that there is no sin that God's mercy cannot reach," the pope said.
