Tea party activists in Delaware are rallying around Republican U.S. Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell as she faces fierce attacks from within the GOP.
About 60 people turned out at a tea party gathering in Wilmington on Tuesday, where O'Donnell made a surprise appearance and accused her opponent for the Republican nomination, Rep. Michael Castle, of mudslinging.
The state GOP establishment sees Castle as its best chance of winning the seat vacated when Democrat Joe Biden became vice president.
GOP party officials accuse O'Donnell of inflating her resume and making flat-out untrue statements.
Castle, a former two-term governor and the longest serving congressman in Delaware history, has refused to debate O'Donnell before the Sept. 14 primary.
